Summary

Take a guided nature walk around wetlands adjacent to the Yampa River. CCCC’s own Biologist and Program Director will guide you through Sandhill Crane breeding biology and habitat, focusing on the birds and animals that share their home with cranes. Look for birds and other wildlife as you get a guided tour of this State Wildlife Area just minutes from town.

About Naturalist and The Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition (CCCC), Erin Gelling is the Program Director for CCCC with a background in Wildlife Biology/Ecology and Environmental Education. She is currently completing her Master’s degree in Rangeland Ecology from the University of Wyoming and has spent over 14 years working with birds across the U.S. CCCC was established in 2011 and works to conserve and protect Greater Sandhill Cranes and their habitat through science and education. CCCC is the collaborative leader in fostering the long-term sustainability of the Rocky Mountain Population of Greater Sandhill Cranes.

Where do you meet: You will meet at "Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area" there is no physical address  Here is a link to google maps

  • Written directions: From Steamboat Springs, take US 40 south to CO 131; turn right. Go half a mile; at the curve, turn right onto CR 14F and then continue onto County Road 14 about a mile, destination on left.

What time and how long is the tour Please arrive at 7:45 am we will set off at 8 AM and return to the parking lot by 10:00 am.

Difficultly/distance: easy terrain/ short distance. Dress/prepare for more time standing still than hiking.

What to wear: Dress for the weather (current and future) and dress in layers! Many people like to wear long pants/sleeves to protect themselves from the sun, dirt, and things that might make you itchy (mosquitos, etc.). Avoid cotton when you’re able to and go with a synthetic material or wool. Also remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes, good socks, a cool sun hat, and sunscreen!

What to bring in your day pack: 2 Water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, extra layers (long sleeve shirt, fleece), and also bring your waterproof jacket- weather changes quickly, make sure to come for cooler/wet weather. We will have extra binoculars for anyone who would like to borrow a pair.
